### Console is an all-in-one community platform designed for growth.&#x20;

Hi there! :wave: We're a bunch of friends and creatives who found ourselves a bit fed up with the usual platforms like Discord, Telegram, and Facebook Groups for growing our communities.

For years we've been craving something simpler, more welcoming, and far more personal. Plus, because we deeply care about empowering ownership, we created a community CRM built on Web3 and [trustLess principles](/).&#x20;

That's why we've come together to create Console. We're pouring our hearts into this project and truly hope it resonates with you. Can't wait for you to join us on this exciting journey!

There are three ways to get started using Console:&#x20;

# How to download Console?

### Mobile

Console is accessible on both [iOS](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/console-chat/id1660962821) and [Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=chat.console.app.android) platforms. Our current builds for iOS and Android are currently in beta testing.&#x20;

In May 2024, we aim to launch the first complete version of the Console mobile app with full features. Hope you're excited to come back and try it!&#x20;

### Web & Desktop&#x20;

Console is also available as a [web](https://app.console.xyz/) application accessible through browsers. Our Mac desktop app is currently available to a limited number of users and is scheduled for public release later this year.

Console has two types of channels: **Community** and **Private**.&#x20;

### **Community channels (Public)**

Community channels are public. Everyone in your community can see your community channels.

### **Private channels**&#x20;

Private channels for discussions that aren't for everyone's eyes. To join a private channel you must either be invited by an admin, or meet one of the private channel's role requirements.

Live Spaces can either be public or private, serving as an excellent medium to facilitate conversations among people. Moreover, there is no cap on the number of participants that can join a Live Space.

Every user has a profile page. Update your photo, bio and personal links to share more about yourself with others in your Console communities.

If you choose, you can secure your alias on Console by using your universal internet name, such as an [ENS](https://ens.domains/) or [BNS](https://btc.us/). For instance, my alias on Console is castig.eth. Since it's an ENS name, it ensures that I am the only one who can use castig.eth on Console.

# Ditch Discord, Come to Console

Logging into Console just once a day has been proven to alleviate the adverse side effects associated with Discord use including spam, scams, and ick vibes

### Console is a more cozy, full-featured community app than Discord.&#x20;

Many communities have transitioned from Discord to Console, while others maintain their Discord presence but use Console for exclusive, members-only chats.&#x20;

### Case study: Artizen

When Artizen switched to Console, Rene, the project's founder, set their Discord to "read-only," closed all channels except one, and left a message (see attached image).&#x20;

* In our **community channels**, you'll find that we have public channels open for anyone to view. These channels are set to "Read-only," allowing everyone to watch but reserving posting privileges for our team members only.
* Our **Q\&A channel,** on the other hand, allows both reading and posting by anyone. It serves as an effective channel for maintaining a close feedback loop with your most dedicated supporters and collaborators.
* **For private discussions,** we utilize several private channels to talk about user-specific information, financial planning, and other sensitive topics that we choose to keep confidential.

Console Live Space are audio (and video) rooms that your community can use to hold digital events on Console.&#x20;


# Proudly crafting a TrustLess future

At the core of our philosophy, Console is built on the foundation of ["TrustLess" design](https://castig.org/trust-less/), which emphasizes five key pillars. These pillars are designed to minimize the need for personal information and reduce potential points of failure, ultimately protecting user freedom, autonomy, and rights.

**Here's a closer look at our five critical pillars:**

1. **Decentralized Name Registry** - Reducing reliance on centralized systems for identity verification.
2. **Decentralized Network** - Ensuring that communications and connections are not controlled by a single entity.
3. **Decentralized Storage** - Keeping user data spread across multiple locations to enhance security and privacy.
4. **Openly Transparent Source Code** - Allowing anyone to review our codebase to ensure integrity and trustworthiness.
5. **End-to-End Encryption** - Guaranteeing that conversations remain private and secure from end to end.

Some of these pillars are already integrated into Console, laying the groundwork for a secure and user-friendly experience. Others are goals we're actively working towards, with a commitment to achieving a more "TrustLess" environment.&#x20;

Our journey is ongoing, and we're excited about the future we're building together. Here you can see our progress:&#x20;

### 1. Decentralized name registry:&#x20;

1. **Support for ENS:** Console supports the [Ethereum Name Service](https://ens.domains/) (ENS), [Bitcoin Name Service](https://btc.us/) (BNS), and [Lens](https://www.lens.xyz/) usernames enabling users to verify their account ownership through unique names. For example, the ownership of "castig.eth" can be verified across all applications, including Console. This unique identification method enhances security and user confidence.
2. **Exploration for support of community ownership**: We are exploring a model similar to Substack for community owners, allowing them to gather email addresses for community access. This model promotes a closer and more direct relationship between community owners and their audience.
3. **Flexible login options**: While we encourage the use of public/private web wallet keys for added security, we also provide traditional login options via phone number and email. Users have the flexibility to start with phone number login and later secure their account further with a web wallet. Moreover, we offer the ability to consolidate multiple web wallets, enabling users to access and manage their Ethereum and Bitcoin wallets through a single Console account. This feature addresses the challenge of managing multiple wallets by offering a unified, convenient access point.

### 2. Decentralized Network

1. **Built on Matrix:** Console is built upon [Matrix.org](https://matrix.org/), an open network that facilitates decentralized communication, ensuring a secure and open environment for our users. As alternative options like XMTP, and Farcaster mature, it’s possible we would consider integrating bridges, or alternative network support for these technologies. We could do this today, it would be quite easy. But in this case we are putting our energy into supporting the user journey because Matrix presently provides promise for sufficient decentralization.&#x20;
2. **Server infrastructure**: Currently, we host our services centrally on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to conduct experiments aimed at enhancing our app. However, we're exploring decentralized options to increase user autonomy.
3. **Home server access**: Selected beta customers and enterprise clients have the opportunity to host their data on their own home servers, granting them greater control over their information.<br>

### 3. Storage Details

1. **Onchain and crypto data ownership:** Users own their onchain data, including cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and POAPs (Proof of Attendance Protocols). Each user of Console is assigned an Ethereum wallet address, ensuring ownership of all digital assets earned on Console.
2. **Beta and enterprise options:** Selected beta customers and enterprise clients have the option to host their data on their own home servers.
3. **Chat data storage**: All chat data is stored on a Synapse server provided by Matrix, hosted on Hetzner. Options for storing your own data are available via Matrix.&#x20;
4. **Tech stack storage:** The entire technology stack is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
5. **Community Activity**: We are contemplating transitioning community activities to Farcaster hubs as they evolve, focusing on casts.

### 4. Open Source Strategy

1. **Open Source Commitment**: We are committed to utilizing open source software whenever it meets the high standards our users expect for a superior experience.
2. **Source Code Release**: We are considering when to release the source code for Console, as well as which license we'll chose. At the moment we are strongly considering the Business Source License (BSL), and open to feedback from the Console community. Alternatively, we may release our front end code under MIT, and backend under BSL. (more to come)

### 5. End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)

* **Beta Release of E2EE**: Console has launched end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in beta for certain users, covering direct messages and private groups. (coming soon)&#x20;
* **Encryption for Audio and Video**: Encryption for audio and video communications is powered by LiveKit, ensuring that these communications are secured. (coming soon)&#x20;

2. Click Roles&#x20;
3. Click "Add role"&#x20;
4. You'll be able to add roles based on onchain data ownership of NFT. You can also setup a role based on a particular user using their ENS, BNS or wallet address.&#x20;

We're excited to announce that we have numerous updates planned for roles, set to roll out around May 2024. Stay tuned for more information. These updates will simplify the process of adding, joining, and managing roles.&#x20;

# Types of permissions

Permissions dictate the level of access granted to members of your community. You can assign one of four types of permissions:

1. **Admin**: Complete admin access including the ability to appoint roles, create channels and everything below.&#x20;
2. **Mod**: May ban users, delete user’s chats and everything below. May write in "read-only" channels.&#x20;
3. **Staff**: May create and edit pages, events and everything below.&#x20;
4. **Member**: Member can join channels.&#x20;

# Why connect your Web3 wallet?

On Console, you can log in using over a hundred Web3 wallets, including MetaMask, Rainbow, Ledger, Trust Wallet, Leather, and any WalletConnect-compatible wallet.

But why?&#x20;

### Benefits for using a web3 wallet:&#x20;

1. **Ownership of Your Account**: Logging in with a Web3 wallet means you own the private keys to your account. This is important for users who prioritize their privacy and control over their identity, preferring not to use email or phone numbers. On Console, the choice to own your keys is yours. The trade-off is convenience; accessing your account requires having your wallet handy, which might not be as straightforward as receiving a text message.
2. **Use Your ENS Universal Identifier**: For those with an ENS name, you can secure your account identity with your universal web name. For example, I'm castig.eth. By linking my wallet and ENS on Console, I can use my universal identifier, ensuring a unique presence.
3. **Display Your Onchain Data**: Connecting your wallet allows Console to showcase your wallet's NFTs on your profile page. NFTs can express your interests and style. A personalized gallery also highlights your uniqueness. At Console, we plan to leverage this onchain data in our spam filters to enhance user experience.

# How to use your default Console wallet

### Every Console account generates a default Ethereum wallet address. You'll see it in your settings:&#x20;

Link multiple wallets to your Console account  to consolidate all your on-chain data under a single Console identity. This includes your ENS names, NFTs, cryptocurrencies, tokens, and more.

We only READ your wallet, but we do not have the ability to sign or make trades for you, ensuring that all your assets on Console remain safe.&#x20;

# How we think about privacy

At Console, we're dedicated to [trustless design](https://docs.console.xyz/overview/proudly-crafting-a-trustless-future) and hold privacy as a fundamental right.&#x20;

Our goal is to build the world's best all-in-one community platform.&#x20;

We take a forward-thinking approach to privacy and are proud of our progress, yet we recognize there's more work to be done to achieve our own high standards.

Here, I'll detail our current status and future plans, providing a clear roadmap of our journey.

### **1. Where We Are Today:**

* **Web3 Wallet Login (Optional):** Users may choose to log in with a Web3 wallet, avoiding the need to share their email or phone number, thereby remaining completely anonymous. This login method is entirely optional, but available for all users.&#x20;
* **Pushing power away from Console, and to the edges (aka. the communities):** Community admins choose the required contact methods for joining their communities. For instance, one community might require a phone number, while another only requires Web3 wallets and ENS names. At Console, we remain neutral, striving to offer multiple options for community admins.
* **Minimal Data Collection:** We collect only the essential data needed to operate Console. Soon we we publish a list of all the data we collect.&#x20;
* **Encryption** — Console chat data is NOT currently end-to-end encrypted. Which means we are currently at the same quality privacy as Slack and Discord. Be we plan to do better. By 2025 we will launch end-to-end encryption for DMs, groups and private channels.&#x20;

### 2. Where we are going in the future

1. **Improved encryption (coming soon) —** We plan to encrypt all email addresses, and phone numbers. We are also considering client-side encryption for sensitive data at rest.&#x20;
2. **Client-side encryption** — Console is built on the Matrix.org network, which makes it easy for us to turn on end-to-end encryption for our chats. At the moment we have the infrastructure built and are running this encryption in beta, we're just waiting for the best time to integrate these features into our UI so we can deliver them to all Console users.&#x20;

### 3. We're bringing Web3 to the World&#x20;

At Console, we offer a progressive approach to building Console as [trustlessly](https://docs.console.xyz/overview/proudly-crafting-a-trustless-future) as possible.

Users have the choice. We expect most users will log into Console with their phone number (the easiest login). But that same user also has the option to add a web wallet, ENS name, or other on-chain data to secure their account with private keys.

Users also have the option to later remove their phone number from our database and thus go fully decentralized.&#x20;

As with many of our choices here at Console, we opt to push this power to the users and communities to decide. We're working to make the onboarding flow as easy as possible and hope Console can be the gateway to onboard the next ten million people to the new internet.

# Airdrop tokens to all your community members

### All Console users have a default Console Wallet &#x20;

Every user on Console is given a default ethereum wallet. At anytime you can export your wallet's private keys to MetaMask (or any wallet provider) and leave Console with your tokens. ### Use the default Console Wallet to airdrop tokens

Airdrop to the Default Console Wallet: The default address can be utilized for airdropping NFTs and/or other tokens.

### How to export all wallet addresses:&#x20;

As an admin, you have the capability to export a list of all wallet addresses within your community. Navigate to Members -> Download CSV.

Note: these addresses are already public! We're simply helping you gather them all into one convenient CSV file. From there, you can use other tools to assist in airdropping tokens to your community.

* Offering a discounted price on event tickets based on the loyalty POAPs collected in a user's wallet.
* Automatically airdropping tokens to everyone in your Console community.
